There's Still No Evidence of the Energy Transition

Time for a reality check. The Statistical Review of World Energy came out last week and the numbers show, yet again, that alt-energy isn’t keeping pace with the growth in hydrocarbons.

On an interesting side note Doug Ford the Premier of the Ontario Canada provincial government quietly permitted the main natural ( methane) gas supplier in Ontario, Enbridge, the permission to add 10% H2 gas to the pipeline supply of gas to households. Numerous materials experts sounded the alarm about leakage and embrittlement of the existing pipes due to hydrogen. Guess who got ignored.

i do consider some points in his views **without** wanting to be called a promoter of conspicary. One thing is practically a fact on all continents : we all rely on fossil fuels, if we like it or not. Measurements to try to lower the dependencies on fossil fuels are welcome e.g. if they really can be replaced or at least complimented by with let's say nuclear power, but so called "renawable" sources like wind- and solar-power will never ever meet the demand. There is indeed one big problem with the climate-chance-disgussion: IT IS OVER EXACORATED. And over-simplified and i do not believe that there is a general consensus on such a simplified view. The simplified vie is: human beings burn things, these things release CO2 (which is an end oxidant product of the vast majority of burning and breathing reactions) and this co2 heats the atmosphere and destroys the planet?? There are so many things being ignored here. co2 is as we all should know still a very faint gas in our air with 0,03 something percent of weight/volume. There are soooo many factors contributing to the climate including many "natural" processes that release co2. This equation "human industry = planet destruction" really is too simple and there are scientists (even ones that won a nobel prize) who do strongly contradict this view but they are seldomly heard. We talk of a climate "crisis" but where is the crisis?? We ignore that there have been so many catastrophic climate/weather phenomenos in the far but also in the recent past. The climate-debate is indeed highly POLITICAL and not very scientific and i find it UNFORTUNATE that everyone who slightly contradicts this narrativ or puts it into question is regarded as a conspiracy-maker. Progably i would not agree with Jusper Machogu that the climate debate was made to keep Africa poor. This too is too simple! BUT something got out of hand in the last 40 years or so that turned the climate debate qhite into EXTREMISM. Take the example of Greta Thunberg talking infront of the high UN commission. To me this is an act of extremism. "how dare you?" ... how dare what? How dare that we created a civilization and put many people into prosperity? This was so madeup and staged and many journalists and politicians simply accepted it. i do apreciate that the climate discussion would become less fanatic, more realistic and more scientific. i do not believe that people who promote the climate apocalypsis over and over again really want a better world for all. many environmentalists are in reality anti-prosperity, anti-civilisation, anti-modernism, anti-cars, anti-this anti-that anti-airplains..... it has indeed come to a point where it is off-rail. Sure, why in the long term, should Africa not exploit natural resources? Especially methane / "natural gas" and also when it comes to oil, modern ways of burning it (especially Diesel engines which are still not fully developed) have a huge potential with meanwhil relatively clean exhaust gasses (and i am not only talking about small car vehicles); we will still be dependant on what we call fossil fules --- although even this term might need overhaup as we don't exactly know iff all oil/gas resources are really "fossil": we don't know how many carbo-hydrate-compounds e.g. came to Earth from Asteroids. Today everything is about narrativ and political ideology. It is for sure that we will long depend on these fules and "zero carbon emmission" is a dream. So why not also let the African continent participate, diversify exploitation of fuels so we's be less dependant e.g. on Russia or the Arab countries? Yes i do see some truth in Jusper Machogus vies, though it all is much complexer. and i would apreciate a more colorful discussion --- this in long term really might make the world better and less fanatic...

I leased a Tesla Model 3 last year just to see what life with an EV was really like. It costs me about $40 a month in electricity to drive it vs. $250 in gas for my Audi. It is painless to live with. I still have the Audi and drive it about once a week. Every time I do, I ask myself why the hell do I still own this thing? I may not get another Tesla, but I will definitely have another EV as my daily driver. I charge at home and I do believe it’s a much harder case to make if you are reliant on public charging. As they say…your mileage may vary.

Hydrogen fuel cells are a proven technology used in the U.S. space program since the 1960s. The disadvantages, as you mentioned, are the expense and volatility of hydrogen. Hydrogen could be produced cheaper using solar power. The advantage of hydrogen as a fuel is that burning it only produces water as a byproduct.

Of course, EV'S are not new either. Both them and their shortcomings were well explored during the 1910's/20's. They lost favor for the same reasons they're tanking, no pun intended, now. They were marketed as clean, easy to operate automobiles for suburban women. The issues were cost related as electricity back then was substantially more expensive than today. Only the rich could afford to operate one. The rapid pace of advancements in the gasoline powered cars meant the window of opportunity closed rather quickly. Detroit has been pushing relatively hard since the late 90's to advance the hydrogen platform. The best stort-term answer is higher octane fuel, which allows higher compression. We could virtually cut in half fuel consumption over a short period of time if we went that direction. The issue is the side effects of that are added chemicals to the fuel to increase knock resistance aren't environmentally friendly. We are stuck, for the time being with a petroleum powered economy.
